A cooker hood can look perfectly respectable from the outside while its filters are holding months of cooking grease, vapour and odours. The decision around extractor filter replacement versus cleaning matters because the right answer depends on the type of filter fitted, how often you cook and whether your extractor vents outside or recirculates air back into the kitchen.
For most households, cleaning the right filter at the right time restores performance and keeps the kitchen fresher. But some filters are designed to be replaced, not washed. Knowing the difference prevents wasted effort, protects your appliance and helps your extractor do the job it was installed to do.
Most domestic extractors have one or both of the following filter types. They serve different purposes, so they need different care.
These are the visible silver, aluminium or stainless-steel mesh panels beneath the hood. Their job is to trap airborne grease before it reaches the extractor motor and internal components. In a ducted extractor, they may be the only filters fitted.
Metal grease filters are generally washable and should usually be cleaned rather than replaced. With regular care, a good-quality metal filter can last for many years.
Charcoal filters sit behind the grease filters and are common in recirculating extractors. Rather than sending air outdoors through ducting, a recirculating hood cleans it and releases it back into the room. The charcoal absorbs cooking odours and helps improve the quality of recirculated air.
Most standard charcoal filters cannot be washed. Once the carbon becomes saturated, it no longer absorbs odours effectively and the filter needs replacing. Some newer long-life or regenerative carbon filters can be refreshed in an oven, but only if the manufacturer specifically says so. Never assume a black carbon filter is washable simply because the metal filter in front of it is.
Cleaning removes the grease that has collected on a washable filter. Replacement provides new filtering material when the original material is no longer capable of doing its job. They are not interchangeable maintenance tasks.
A metal grease filter can become tacky, darkened and difficult to see through. That does not necessarily mean it has reached the end of its life. If the mesh is intact, the frame is not bent and the filter comes clean, washing is normally the sensible option.
A charcoal filter is different. It may still look fairly clean while being unable to control persistent cooking smells. Because its active carbon works by absorption, there is usually no meaningful way to clean a standard disposable version. Replacement is the correct route.
The decision can also be affected by condition. A metal filter with damaged clips, torn mesh, corroded sections or a distorted frame may not sit securely in the hood. In that case, replacement is safer and more effective than trying to rescue it.
For washable grease filters, routine cleaning is usually the most economical and effective approach. As a broad guide, clean them every one to three months. A household that cooks daily, fries often, uses a wok or runs a busy family kitchen may need to clean filters monthly. A lightly used extractor may need attention less often.
Signs that your grease filter needs cleaning include visible grease on the mesh, a sticky feel, slower extraction, drips forming around the hood, or a lingering greasy smell after cooking. You may also notice that the fan sounds as though it is working harder than usual.
Before removing any filter, switch the extractor off and allow it to cool. Most filters release using a small latch. Support the panel as you release it, particularly on larger range cooker hoods, as it may be heavier than expected.
A careful wash in warm water with a suitable degreasing solution can loosen normal build-up. Some manufacturer instructions allow dishwasher cleaning, but this is not universal. Aluminium filters can discolour or dull in some dishwashers and with strong alkaline products, so check the appliance manual first. If you are unsure, hand cleaning is the lower-risk option.
The filter must be completely dry before it goes back into the extractor. Reinstalling a damp filter can encourage grime to cling to the mesh and is never a good idea around an electrical appliance.
Replace a standard charcoal filter according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule, commonly every three to six months. Homes where fish, spices, frying or strong-smelling foods are cooked regularly may need new filters sooner. If the extractor still moves air but the kitchen smells stale or cooking odours hang around long after a meal, the carbon filters are a likely cause.
Replacement is also sensible when a grease filter cannot be restored to a clean, open mesh. Layers of baked-on grease can restrict airflow, and repeated harsh cleaning can weaken the material. A new metal filter is often a modest cost compared with the effect of grease reaching the motor or ducting.
Look out for cracked plastic charcoal cassettes, loose carbon granules, broken retaining tabs and filters that no longer fit snugly. These are not issues to ignore. A badly fitted filter can rattle, reduce effectiveness or fall when the hood is in use.
If you do replace a filter, use the exact part number or a compatible filter confirmed for your make and model. Cooker hood filters are not one-size-fits-all. The wrong size may look close enough but leave gaps, affect the hood’s operation or fail to clip into place properly.
The obvious symptom of a dirty extractor is a kitchen that smells of last night’s dinner. The wider issue is airflow. Grease filters allow the hood to capture airborne grease while letting air pass through. As grease blocks the mesh, the extractor has to work harder to achieve less.
That can mean more condensation on windows and cupboards, more grease settling on nearby surfaces and a less pleasant cooking environment. In homes with a range cooker, AGA or Everhot, where cooking is often central to everyday life, extractor maintenance can make a noticeable difference to the room.
There is a safety element too. Grease is combustible, and allowing heavy deposits to build up in filters or inside a hood is not good practice. Cleaning the visible filters helps, but it does not automatically remove grease from the fan housing, internal canopy or ducting. If the extractor is heavily soiled, a professional deep clean can provide reassurance that the parts you cannot easily reach have received proper attention.
Strong caustic oven cleaners, abrasive scourers and aggressive chemicals can damage filter coatings, aluminium mesh and surrounding extractor finishes. They can also leave residues that you do not want close to cooking areas. The quickest-looking shortcut is not always the best one.
It is also tempting to keep washing a disposable charcoal filter in the hope of getting a little more life from it. Water does not restore the absorption capacity of standard carbon filters. It can leave the filter ineffective, misshapen or unsuitable for refitting.
Take care with the hood itself as well. Spraying liquid directly into controls, lights or the motor area risks moisture getting where it should not. Apply cleaning solution to a cloth instead, and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance for painted, stainless steel, glass or brass finishes.
A quick monthly check is often enough to stop extractor care becoming an unpleasant, greasy job. Remove the metal filters, assess whether light can pass through the mesh and inspect the surrounding canopy for build-up. If the filter feels sticky or the mesh is visibly clogged, clean it.
At the same time, note when charcoal filters were last changed. Writing the date inside a kitchen cupboard or setting a reminder on your mobile phone makes replacement much easier to stay on top of. For recirculating extractors, this small habit can have a real impact on everyday odours.
If the hood is loud, underperforming or heavily coated despite clean filters, the issue may extend beyond the panels. Ducting, fan components and internal surfaces can all affect results. A specialist clean is particularly worthwhile before moving home, after a busy period of cooking, or when restoring the finish of a premium cooker and its surrounding extractor.
