A Brief History of Taunton
Taunton's history stretches back to Saxon times, with records showing a settlement existed here over a thousand years ago. The town grew in importance during the medieval period and became closely associated with the Bishops of Winchester, who established a religious centre and later developed what became Taunton Castle. The town eventually became the administrative centre of Somerset and remains the county town today.
Taunton also played a significant role in English history. In 1685, the Duke of Monmouth famously declared himself king in Taunton during the Monmouth Rebellion. Following the rebellion's defeat, the notorious Bloody Assizes took place in the town, leaving a lasting mark on local history.
